12th Annual Shoe Memorial
December 6, 2020
December 6 is Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, and we again ask you to look into your closets for women’s shoes.
It has been 25 years since fourteen women were selectively killed at the Montreal Polytechnique. Government and media no longer widely acknowledge this day. With your help we will remember the over 726 women killed by violence in BC since then and those before.
There has been an amazing difference in the attitudes and reactions of the public since our 1st Shoe Memorial and in particular since the struggle to erect the Marker of Change. But women and girls are still dying needlessly so again we are collecting shoes and building our Memorial at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Other groups join us across Canada building Shoe Memorials so that we never forget.
